Frequently asked questions
Answers for pharmacy, nursing, materials management and quality leaders evaluating smartSTAT.
smartSTAT is a hospital code cart with built-in RFID inventory tracking. It continuously reads tagged medications and supplies, shows status on the cart and dashboard, and replaces manual checks.
Tag each medication and supply at intake, then stock any drawer. The cart continuously reads its contents, with drawer lights, a display and a dashboard showing missing items and upcoming expirations.
Yes, smartSTAT is a complete cart, not a retrofit. Existing carts are not standardized, making added sensors impractical and unreliable. Hospitals get the most value with the whole fleet on one dashboard.
No, pharmacy and materials management still restock. smartSTAT identifies missing or expiring items by cart and drawer, so staff restock by exception instead of inspection.
Tracking continues during a code, with an ACLS view that tracks shocks and on-screen item search. Removed items are recorded automatically, so the restock list is ready when the code ends.
Pharmacy, nursing, materials management and quality teams responsible for code cart readiness. Staff restock by exception, nurses check carts in seconds, and quality teams get a continuous readiness record.
In an independent randomized crossover study at MIT's Center for Clinical and Translational Research, 17 of 25 clinicians missed expired or missing items by hand; none did with smartSTAT. Core checks took 81 to 92 percent less time, with a System Usability Scale score of 86 (SUS 86). The manuscript is under peer review.
Core checks took 81 percent less time for nurses, 87 percent less for pharmacists and 92 percent less for technicians. For a cart with 200+ items, a roughly 30-minute manual check is projected to take under a minute. Hospitals currently spend about 133 staff hours per cart per year on manual checks.
Nurses learn the daily check from a video under five minutes long. Pharmacy and materials staff get hands-on tagging and restock training, a written guide and a tagging-workflow chatbot.
No, smartSTAT tracks inventory, not patient data, and provides no treatment or diagnostic information; cart hardware does not keep customer data. Staff access to production requires MFA, hospital users can use SSO or MFA, and everyone with customer data access is background checked. A Business Associate Agreement is available.
No, smartSTAT provides the cart and tracking system. Your defibrillator sits on top of the cart as it does today.
The dashboard locates affected items by cart, so staff check only those carts.
Carts are assembled by a contract manufacturer in Ohio. smartSTAT is headquartered in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
